A war story Bugs Bunny could love

Trying to win hearts and minds in a combat zone isn’t a new phenomenon created for the current Iraq War; my father’s Army platoon tried to do the same in Vietnam.
But their useful gift for the malnourished villagers – rabbits from a Catholic Church charity, hutched in old ammunition crates – had unexpected results.

Not as good a story as neutered rabbits but: we had a Civic Action Patrol (CAP) officer come to 19th Adv Team compound(MAC-V) on the south edge of Quang Tri City and he was looking for volunteers to help villagers build and maintain small bridges over canals and swamps at a nearby village. It never occurred to us that the local villagers had been building and maintaining their footbridges for centuries. After we spent all day building a bridge….
local ‘observers’ pointed out that our bridge went to a little hill in the middle of a swamp… a bridge to nowhere. They said that it was possible that, with patience, the little island might grow some day to honor our bridge.
